Announcement No: 7/02/08

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, general secretary of the National League for Democracy, is a citizen and an offspring of two [Burmese] citizens -- Daw Khin Kyi and General Aung San, the founding father of the Defense Services and architect of Burma's independence, who is known for his personal sacrifices and endeavors to liberate this country from the yokes of colonialism and fascism.

We have learned from news agency reports that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will not be allowed to contest in the elections scheduled for 2010. This is an unlawful statement since it was made by an unauthorized person and at a time when no state constitution or election law is in force. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is someone who inevitably needs to be involved in the political processes of Burma .

The statement made is nothing more than a personal and political attack to prevent Daw Aung San Suu Kyi from entering the election. Furthermore, it violates Article 2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which says: "... without distinction of any kind, such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status" and Article 21, which states: "Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives."

We hereby declare that such an assertion should not be made particularly at a time when Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Minister for Relations U Aung Kyi are engaged in constructive talks for the good of the nation because it could affect national reconciliation and peace and stability.

As per the decision taken at the Central Executive Committee Meeting of 25 February 2008
